How to Do:
"Way to Happiness" Auditing
Note: The booklet "The Way to Happiness" is not included in ST, but is available on-line at http://lronhubbard.org or second hand from online auctions.
"Way to Happiness" Auditing is based on a booklet and a moral code. The moral code consists of a total of 38 rules under 21 headings and sub-headings. The code has carefully been crafted as to contain rules for good and ethical survival. The basic idea is to have the pc read the rules, one by one, and peel off any false data, traumatic incidents, disagreements and considerations coming to view and handle them with auditing. As a result the pc is now capable of breaking away from immoral conduct and adopt a more pro-survival and moral attitude. There are 10 basic auditing steps each concept or rule is taken through.
People will be found to be quite confused on the subject of morals. Cleaning the subject up and adopt some basic rules, based on survival, is thus a practical thing to do and give people better stable data for living. All moral codes were published as stable data to live by. This is true for the Ten Commandments and any other code. The code in "Way to Happiness" is a non-religious code based on sound, common-sense principles and survival. It does not contradict the Ten Commandments or the Precepts from other major religions. It rather builds on their wisdom. The RD itself picks up specific confusions, transgressions, agreements and valences. It helps the person get rid of a lot of shame, blame, and regret.
Where Does it Fit
HRD can be done any time after full drug handling, including Objective processes. It can be given before, after or between the Grades. It is mainly 2WComm and can be run at any time, really, but it possibly would do little good on a drug case with no Recall Drug RD done. If there is a choice of whether to run the HRD before or after Grades, it is to prefer to run the HRD before the Grades. The HRD raises confront, responsibility and thus the ability to As-is. A HRD completion will be able to run deeper and get more out of subsequent auditing. The HRD doesn't replace Grades or advanced auditing.
There are two different ways to do the RD. One is by Assessment and then take up what is found. The other is to go through it all line by line.
The Assessment method requires Assessment of the Precepts to find the most charged. This method is only used on about 5% of cases. It is covered near the end of the chapter.
Line by Line
All pc's are started on the Line by Line Method. It simply follows the command sheet. The basic RD uses the following techniques: False Data Stripping (see ST0). Two Way comm auditing (see ST 3) and Recall techniques (See ST0).
The basic steps of this procedure are:
A. Clean up the words "moral" and "morality". Get them defined. Get off any false data on "morality" handled with FDS. Then you handle, if reading, the two-way comm, "Tell me your ideas and considerations on morality" and get it to F/N.
B. Take up each numbered section of the booklet from Precept number 1 forward (using the command sheet line for line) and do the following ten steps:
1. Have pc read the numbered Precept aloud.
2. Check for and clear up any misunderstood word or words in it.
3. Have pc read the text below the Precept aloud.
4. Check for and clear up any misunderstood word or words in the section.
5. Look for and clear up any false data the pc may have for that Precept, using FDS (reads are not checked in FDS).
6. Do a 2-way comm, E/S to F/N "How have others broken (that Precept)". This is done per "Two way comm as auditing", checking subject for read.
7. Do a 2-way comm, E/S to F/N "How have you broken (that Precept)". This is done per "Two way comm as auditing, checking subject for read. Keep #6,7 light, but be ready to fly any out rudiment, including M/WH.
8. This is the Valence Step. The question is taken up if it reads. "Is there any special person in your past who really broke (the Precept)". You take whatever the pc gives you. It is NOT repetitive as that could go into L&N, but the pc may offer more than one person. Each reading terminal is taken through the handling steps, of course. It is run as light Recall: an exact moment the person was breaking Precept (see command sheet for exact questions). A light auditor approach can get the valence to separate out just by doing that and without plowing the person into the Bank.
An alternate for this step: ask for an overt the pc did against the person (asked metered). The object of the step is to get the valence separated from the pc.
More on Valence Steps
The valence handling steps 8a through 8f, are handled as follow:
(a) Once you have gotten a reading terminal to run with question 8a ("Is there any specific person in your past who really transgressed against the Precept _____?"), the following steps are not checked for read. You are using these steps to lightly to get the pc separated out from the valence.
(b) The pc may occasionally give more than one terminal on (8a). Note down each terminal with reads. Handle them in order of longest read. This is very similar to terminals lists on Grades. Don't push it or you will get pc into L&N; should this happen for some reason, be prepared to handle with L&N tech, such as an L4BRB. This does not happen very often at all, but it should be known as a possibility. (Note: If the pc should come up with the answer "me" in response to question 8a, the answer is accepted, but this item would not be run in the valence separation steps. If the pc has other reading answers for the question, they are handled as usual).
On the valence handling steps the pc may not always specifically express that he has "separated out of the valence of the person being run." Sometimes there is simply an obvious key-out, F/N, VGIs. This needs to be drilled until the auditor can easily detect an EP for these steps and knows when to end off on them. Also, auditor has to make it clear in the worksheets what is happening so the C/S can follow the change of case and correct the auditor's procedure if needed.
9. Check with the pc, "Do you have any reservations about keeping (the Precept)?". Let simply pc say whatever he or she feels like and you should get an F/N. If it reads, find it and handle anything non optimum with two-way comm (one of the above steps might have been missed if the person has reservations). Get it to F/N.
10. In the same fashion check, "Do you have any reservations on getting someone else to keep it?"
All of the auditing questions on the Rundown are checked for a read. There are some steps which are not "auditing questions" as such, like having the pc read the Precept. A part of the RD (step 5) is use of FDS. FDS questions are not tested for read. A question designed to locate false data will not necessarily read on the Meter. This is because the person believes the data to be true.
The questions which ask for misunderstood words do not have to read for the pc to answer; but the auditor should keep an eye on the Meter and be aware of an instant read on a word clearing question and would follow up on such a read. An instant read on a question such as "Do you have any misunderstoods on...?" means that there is something there to be cleaned up.
The above is how to do the basic ten steps of the Line by Line Method.
Precept 17-2 ("Learn") starts with a hot question. There is a special handling, when needed, to get any charge off it.
The first two sentences of Precept 17-2 are: "Has there ever been an instance when another had some false data about you? Did it cause you trouble?" The special steps are also taken up if the pc becomes introverted or misemotional over the two sentences. As they are auditing questions, they are of course checked for read before running them. Don't try to give somebody a full study tech course or handling when doing this RD. If pc has lots of charge on this get it to F/N somehow and suggest the Word Clearing Intensive. On HRD you want to stay on the main line of the RD.
Precept 19 ("Try not to do things to others that you would not like them to do to you") can easily go into O/Ws. It may get into shame, blame and regret. Its EP is really to teach someone what a harmful act is, not to give them a full O/W handling. But remember to pick up any M/W/Hs here or at any time.
Precept 20 ("Try to treat others as you would like them to treat you") has a different handling. One simply does steps 1 - 4 as usual.
Next: the auditor gets the pc to imagine being treated in this fashion for each item (Example: "Can you imagine being treated fairly?"). Then take up, step by step, treating another and others in that fashion. One or more of these items may be charged either on being treated that way or treating others that way. Just handle with 2WC. Then have pc re-read Precept 20 and then clean up any reservations per the usual step 9, 10. The goal here is to get pc to subjectively understand good behavior. That's the real EP of number 20.
Pc's may express disagreements with a Precept anywhere up to step 5. Don't jump on him; pc may simply have to talk it out. Step 5, FDS, may handle it. The other steps may as well. Don't give it any special attention as people needs to talk it off. If pc seems upset about it, it probably means a M/W/H. If it doesn't resolve, check for it and pull it.
There is a final epilogue in the book. This is also taken up in the Rundown.
If no spectacular EP occurs on the Rundown, suspect one of two things: it has been overrun it (or other auditing errors) and the EP is suppressed/invalidated. Or the RD is not complete and should be started again from the top, as something has been overlooked. Thus, where the RD does not result in an EP, one repairs it and, if needed, does it again. This has to be decided by the C/S.
As mentioned, there is a second method method used in auditing the HRD: by Assessment. A list of the Precepts has been prepared for this purpose. It is assessed method 5 and handled per longest read. The handling is to take it through the 10 basic steps, as given above.
This method is used in several of the handlings on the Repair List (HRL). It locates heavily charged Precepts that can be taken up and handled. The HRD Auditor must know both the Line by Line method and the Assessment method.
The procedure for doing the Assessment method is:
1. Use the "Precept Assessment List" of all the Precepts.
2. Clear all the words that appear on the Assessment list with the pc.
3. Assess the list Method 5.
4. Take up the longest reading Precept or sub-Precept and handle it using the basic 10 steps above.
5. Continue to handle the reading Precepts in order of length of reads until all reads are handled.
The object of the HRD is:
1. To clear up any confusions on the subject of morals;
2. To clean up any and all breaches of the specific morals laid out in the booklet;
3. To get the pc separated from any valence of any immoral person; and
4. To obtain an EP of realization/cognition that one really is on the Way to Happiness.
The pc should attest to having realized that he/she really is on the Way to Happiness.
The remedy for auditor errors on the HRD is to assess and handle the Repair List (HRL). When an HRL is done and the reads handled, the HRD can be continued from where it was left off.
